Hyperliquid Liquidation Calculator

Liquidation price and maintenance margin using Hyperliquid's own documented rules, cross or isolated, plus whether your position closes in full or in 20% slices.

Margin mode

Max leverage is set per asset on Hyperliquid (3x to 40x) and drives the maintenance margin rate below. Isolated margin is the collateral you allocated to this position (a common default is notional ÷ leverage).

This models Hyperliquid's documented formula for a single position, before fees and funding, and does not model the unpublished per-tier deduction on very large positions. Otomato auto-detects your open Hyperliquid positions from your wallet address and alerts you on Telegram or the mobile app as they approach liquidation.

This position's $10,000 notional is below the $100,000 threshold, so Hyperliquid sends one market order for the full position size when it liquidates.

Does Hyperliquid do full liquidation?

Yes, by default. Once your equity falls below the maintenance margin, Hyperliquid sends a market order for the full size of your position to the order book. It may fill fully or partially depending on liquidity.

Two things change that answer. First, positions above 100,000 USDC notional are not closed all at once, Hyperliquid hits them for 20% at a time. Second, if the book cannot clear the order and equity keeps falling below two thirds of the maintenance margin, a backstop liquidation takes over instead of the book: the position is transferred to Hyperliquid's liquidator vault, a component strategy of HLP. The calculator above tells you which path your position is on and where that backstop threshold sits.

How the Hyperliquid liquidation price is calculated

Hyperliquid publishes the exact formula: liq_price = price − side × margin_available / position_size / (1 − l × side), where side is 1 for a long and −1 for a short, and l is 1 divided by the maintenance leverage, which is twice the asset's max leverage. Margin available is your account value minus the maintenance margin required in cross mode, or your isolated margin minus the maintenance margin required in isolated mode.

The maintenance margin itself is half of the initial margin required at an asset's max leverage, so the rate is 1 / (2 × max leverage): about 1.25% for a 40x asset up to 16.7% for a 3x asset. This is different from the generic liquidation price calculator, which uses a manually entered maintenance-margin percent, this one derives it directly from the max leverage the way Hyperliquid actually does.

One consequence worth knowing: your cross liquidation price does not depend on the leverage you selected, it depends on your account value and position size. Only isolated liquidation price moves with the leverage you choose. Large positions also get a tiered deduction that keeps the maintenance margin requirement continuous across size tiers, Hyperliquid documents the mechanism but not the per-tier values, so this calculator uses the flat rate.

Maintenance margin and the backstop liquidation

If your position closes on the order book and margin requirements are met again, any remaining collateral stays with you, and there is no clearance fee. The real cost sits in a backstop liquidation: the maintenance margin is not returned to you.

Backstop severity also depends on margin mode. A cross backstop liquidation takes all of your cross positions and cross margin at once, so a trader with no isolated positions can be left with zero account equity. An isolated backstop only touches that one position, the rest of your account is untouched.

None of this replaces watching your liquidation risk in real time. Otomato reads your wallet address, auto-detects your open Hyperliquid positions with no signatures and no ability to move funds, and alerts you on Telegram or the native app as a position approaches liquidation. Funding is a separate cost worth tracking too, see the funding rate calculator and Hyperliquid funding rate guide, or check who is carrying the largest perpetual positions right now on the Hyperliquid whale tracker.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hyperliquid do full liquidation?
Yes, by default. When your equity falls below the maintenance margin, Hyperliquid sends a market order for the full size of your position to the order book. Two qualifiers change this: positions above 100,000 USDC notional are closed in 20% slices instead of all at once, and if the book cannot absorb the order and equity drops below two thirds of the maintenance margin, a backstop liquidation transfers the remaining position to the liquidator vault instead.
What is the maintenance margin on Hyperliquid?
It is half of the initial margin required at the asset's maximum leverage, so the rate equals 1 divided by 2 times max leverage. That works out to about 1.25% for a 40x asset and up to 16.7% for a 3x asset. At 20x max leverage the maintenance margin rate is 2.5%. For large positions Hyperliquid applies a tiered formula with a per tier deduction that keeps the requirement continuous across tier boundaries, but those per tier values are not published.
How is the Hyperliquid liquidation price calculated?
Hyperliquid's documented formula is liq_price = price - side x margin_available / position_size / (1 - l x side), where side is 1 for a long and -1 for a short, and l is 1 divided by the maintenance leverage, which is twice your asset's max leverage. Margin available is your account value minus the maintenance margin required in cross mode, or your isolated margin minus the maintenance margin required in isolated mode. Cross liquidation price does not depend on the leverage you selected, only on your account value and position size. Isolated liquidation price does.
What is a backstop liquidation?
It is the fallback when the order book cannot absorb your liquidation order and your equity keeps falling. Once equity drops below two thirds of the maintenance margin, the position is transferred to Hyperliquid's liquidator vault, a component strategy of HLP, instead of being closed on the book. A cross backstop liquidation takes all of your cross positions and cross margin, so a trader with no isolated positions is left with zero account equity. An isolated backstop only touches that one position.
Do I keep my collateral after a liquidation?
If your position closes on the order book and margin requirements are met again, yes, any remaining collateral stays with you and there is no clearance fee. The real penalty is in a backstop liquidation, where the maintenance margin itself is not returned to you.
