How the crypto ROI calculator works
Return on investment (ROI) is your profit expressed as a percentage of what you put in: (exit value − entry value) / entry value × 100. It lets you compare trades of any size on equal footing, which raw dollar profit cannot.
The multiple is the same result as a factor, so a 100% ROI is a 2x and a 200% ROI is a 3x. The reverse field works backwards: give it a target ROI and it returns the exit price you would need, entry × (1 + target).
ROI says nothing about time or risk, a fast 50% and a five-year 50% are very different. Once you have a target price in mind, Otomato can watch the position and alert you when it gets there.
The complete guide
What ROI tells you (and what it hides)
Return on investment turns a raw dollar profit into a percentage of the capital you committed, which is the only way to compare a small trade against a large one. A $500 gain means very little until you know it came from $1,000 (a 50% ROI) or $50,000 (a 1% ROI).
What ROI deliberately ignores is time and risk. A 50% return in a week and a 50% return over five years look identical on this metric but are worlds apart, so always read ROI next to how long you held and how much you could have lost.
Working backwards from a target
The reverse calculation answers a question every investor actually asks: what price do I need to hit my goal? Because ROI equals (exit minus entry) over entry, the exit price for a target return is simply entry times one plus the target.
- A 2x (100% ROI) needs price to double from your entry.
- A 3x (200% ROI) needs price to triple.
- A 10x (900% ROI) needs ten times your entry price.
Once you have that target price, the discipline is waiting for it without watching charts all day. Otomato can alert you the moment a position reaches the level you set.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate crypto ROI?
- ROI (return on investment) is your profit divided by what you put in, shown as a percentage: (exit value − entry value) / entry value × 100. A $1,000 position that grows to $1,500 is a 50% ROI. The multiple (1.5x here) is the same idea expressed as a factor.
- What price do I need for a target ROI?
- Rearrange the formula: target price = entry price × (1 + target ROI). To double your money (100% ROI) you need the price to reach twice your entry; for a 3x (200% ROI) you need three times your entry. This calculator shows that reverse target for you.
- Is a high ROI always good?
- ROI ignores time and risk. A 50% ROI in a week and a 50% ROI over five years are very different, and a big ROI on a tiny, illiquid position can be hard to actually realise. Use ROI alongside how long you held and how much you risked.
